Integrated Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Strategy November 2023
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the top ten global public health threats, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and it also affects animals. Since powerful antibiotics are becoming ineffective due to bacterial resistance to antimicrobials, there will be a significant loss of agricultural output that is incorporated into the food chain as well as human and animal deaths. Antimicrobials are being used more often in aquaculture and other farming systems, as well as for the health of humans and animals. The improper and excessive use of these antibiotics has a direct detrimental effect on ecosystems, health, and the environment.
The Government of Liberia acknowledged this issue and found that it was necessary to join international efforts to address AMR by endorsing various consensuses through the One Health approach. In close collaboration with other stakeholders at the local and global levels, the Liberian ministries in charge of human and animal health as well as the environment (Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority) led the development of this integrated AMR surveillance strategy.
This plan will assist in streamlining AMR surveillance efforts in Liberia's environment, agricultural, and human health sectors. It is expected that this strategy will be successfully put into practice, closely monitored, and evaluated on a regular basis, considering the lessons learned through its application.
