Integrated Animal Disease Surveillance and Response System - 2nd Edition

The fight against animal diseases relies essentially on a reliable and continuous knowledge of the epidemiological situation through an epidemiological surveillance system.

In Liberia, the evaluation of Performance of Veterinary Services (PVS) conducted by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH/OIE) in 2016 and the Evaluation Surveillance Tool carried out by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 2017 demonstrated the lack of a formal surveillance mechanism for animal diseases.

At the beginning of 2019, the Veterinary Services Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture of Liberia with the technical support of its partners, especially the FAO Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (FAO-ECTAD), provided the country with an Animal Diseases Surveillance and Response System (IADSRSS). This is a first in the history of veterinary services in the country. The system involves circulation of information between the field, the central level and the partners is a real tool for disease prevention and decision support. With the flexibility of design and organization in a One Health (OH) approach, the new surveillance system will adapt to changing health conditions at the national, regional, and international levels. Regular internal evaluation through performance indicators will be carried out in order to provide all the necessary solutions in time for the functioning and efficiency of the system. With the young and enthusiastic team at the level of the Central Veterinary Epidemiology Unit (CVEPU), the Central Veterinary Laboratory (CVL) of the veterinary services, our actors in the field and the continuous support of our partners, there is no doubt about the efficient implementation of the system to achieve our objectives.
